Heroin: users "at risk"

An arrest has been made after a man died from a suspected heroin overdose in Penzance last night.

Police were called to Alexandria Place by paramedics just before midnight, where two men were being treated for a suspected drug overdose.

One, a 49 year old local man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A second was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital where he is still being treated.

A third man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a controlled substance. The police say he will be interviewed later today.

Dangers

DI Tony Blatchford said: “There are instances of higher-purity Heroin which could result in death.

“We are aware that heroin users are at risk when the drug is used alongside other substances, especially alcohol and sedative medications.

“Drug users are also at risk when their tolerance is low - for example when coming out of prison."
