Opposition leader Andry Rajoelina celebrated in the island's capital Antananarivo after being appointed Madagascar's new leader.

The move came a day after military leaders granted powers to the former disc jockey when President Marc Ravalomanana stepped down.

Rajoelina partied with supporters in the street after meeting his ministers to plan strategies.

Among his priorities are an anti-poverty programme and controlling dissent in the armed forces.

Image for Sudan accused of war crimes

Sudan's president Omar al-Bashir has been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

This is the first time the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued a warrant against a sitting head of the state.

The UN has accused the Sudanese government of ordering mass murder, rape and torture against non-Arab tribes in Darfur for revolting against the government. However, the government has persistently denied the accusations.

Nearly 300,000 million people have been killed and millions been displaced since the war started in 2003.
