Hillary Clinton: move is "deeply negative"

Reuters

Hillary Clinton will arrive at the Moscow summit tomorrow as anger over Israeli settlements hinders the peace progress in the Middle East..

Mrs Clinton will join the meeting of the Quartet of International Mediators in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, due to start on Friday.

Hope for successful peace discussions were diminished earlier this week when Israel declared it would build 1,600 new homes in East Jerusalem. The US Secretary of State said the move was "a deeply negative signal" for the Middle East peace process.

The hunting of baby seals is to be stopped in Russia, the government has announced.

Russia has seen protests in 20 different cities this week in support of the ban. Valdimir Putin, Russia's Prime Minister said the trade was a “bloody industry”.

The EU is trying to prevent the killing and has proposed a ban on the sale of all seal products.

It is looking at the import, transit and export of the materials used. Its response follows European Parliament concerns that these practices have caused unwarranted suffering.

The security service in Ukraine has launched an armed raid on the country’s state-run gas company headquarters in Kiev.

Naftogaz said 30 masked gunmen headed for the company director’s office in search of documents relating to a gas deal with Russia.

Officials for the Security Agency said the raid was part of a criminal investigation into the company’s alleged diversion of gas from Russia. Officials are also questioning top accountants.
