Minack: "like a Greek amphitheatre"

Performers are being invited to audition for a Stephen Berkoff play at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall.

The theatre in Porthcurno is to play host to the performance Metamorphosis in June.

The production company, Rough Coast Community Arts, is looking for actors with a strong and dynamic presence.

The play is a stage adaptation of Franz Kafka’s short story Metamorphosis, in which a man wakes up one morning to find he has turned into a giant beetle, leaving his family in crisis and without any income.

The production relies on Berkoff’s trademark intense physical theatre and director Sarah Lincoln is looking for actors who can work as an ensemble.

Comic

“What I really need are actors who can take an idea and run with it, who like the idea of being both physical, dynamic, comic and even a bit political about the piece. This is great opportunity to show that professionally led community based productions can lead rather than follow trends.”

The theatre opened to the public in 1932, and remains a popular attraction. Stars such as John Nettles, Sue Pollard and Will Self have graced the stage.

Actress Nancy Shackerley believes the unique atmosphere makes any visit to the Minack a special occasion.

“There’s a real sense of history because the stage and the seats that the audience sit on are carved out of stone, you really feel like you’re stepping back in time, you could be in a Greek amphitheatre,” she said

Auditions are being held at The Island Centre, St Ives on Monday 15th March, from 7.30pm to 10pm.
